What to Do in
Merzouga, Morocco
Merzouga is one of the world's great desert destinations — a place where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise up to 150 metres above the Saharan floor and the night sky fills with more stars than seem possible. Staying at Sahara Royal Resort, our luxury desert camp in Merzouga gives you direct access to all of these experiences from the moment you arrive. Here is our complete guide to what to do in Merzouga.
1. Camel Ride at Sunrise or Sunset
Nothing defines the Merzouga desert experience quite like a private camel ride on the Erg Chebbi dunes. Swaying gently on a traditional Mehari camel as the sun rises or sets over an ocean of golden sand is one of those experiences that stays with you for a lifetime. Our guides at Sahara Royal Resort lead small private groups — just you and your companions — through corridors of dunes that most travellers never reach.
Sunrise rides begin just before dawn and take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Sunset rides depart around 5pm and conclude in the deep violet silence of desert dusk. Both are arranged directly through our camp — simply let us know when booking. See our gallery of desert experiences for a glimpse of what awaits.
2. Stargazing on the Dunes
Merzouga sits far from any city, in one of Morocco's darkest regions. On a clear night — which is most nights between October and April — the Sahara sky above Erg Chebbi is extraordinary: the full arc of the Milky Way, thousands of individual stars, and a silence so complete you can hear your own heartbeat. Stargazing in Merzouga is one of the most moving natural experiences available anywhere on earth.
At Sahara Royal Resort, we arrange guided stargazing sessions on request — our team takes you out onto the dunes away from any camp lighting and helps identify major constellations. Alternatively, simply lying back on a dune blanket after dinner and looking straight up is equally spectacular and completely free. Consult our full guide to the best time to visit Merzouga desert Morocco — stargazing is especially magical from October through February.
3. Quad Bike & Buggy Adventure
For travellers who want to explore the Erg Chebbi landscape at speed, quad biking and dune buggy excursions offer an unforgettable rush across the open sand. Guided expeditions take you through dramatic dune ridges, into remote sections of the erg, and to panoramic viewpoints high above the desert floor. Sessions last from one hour to a full half-day and can be arranged through our camp.
Quad bikes are suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike. Buggies accommodate two passengers and are particularly popular with couples and families. All equipment is maintained to strict safety standards and guides accompany every group throughout the excursion.

One of the rarest and most extraordinary luxuries in Merzouga is the outdoor swimming pool at Sahara Royal Resort. A shimmering expanse of cool, clear water set against the amber sweep of the Erg Chebbi dunes — this is not something you expect to find in the Sahara, which makes it all the more extraordinary when you do. After a morning camel ride or a sun-drenched afternoon, slipping into the pool as the light fades over the desert is an experience that defines the resort.
The pool is open to all guests throughout the day and is particularly magical after dark, when the stars reflect on the water. Browse our photo gallery to see it for yourself.
5. Dune Dinner & Berber Evening
One of the most unforgettable experiences in Merzouga is a private candlelit dinner set among the dunes. Our team sets a table among the sand, lit by lanterns, with a personalised Moroccan menu — tagine, couscous, harira soup, freshly baked bread — served under an open sky alive with stars. Available for couples, honeymooners, and special celebrations, this is an evening that stays with guests forever.
Each evening, the Sahara Royal Resort Majlis comes alive with traditional Gnawa and Berber music played by resident musicians — the deep rhythms of the desert, firelight, and the sound of instruments that have been played here for centuries. Every stay includes this experience as part of the camp atmosphere.
6. Sunrise Walk in the Dunes
A guided sunrise walk on the Erg Chebbi dunes is one of the quietest and most profound experiences Merzouga offers. The camp awakens before dawn. You walk out into the cool desert air, guided by a Berber team member who knows the dune field intimately, and reach your chosen vantage point just as the first pale light appears on the horizon. Over the next twenty minutes, the dunes transform — from grey to pink to copper to gold — in a display of natural beauty that no photograph adequately captures.
Sunrise walks take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and require no special fitness. We recommend light layers for the early morning chill and comfortable shoes. This experience is available to all guests staying at Sahara Royal Resort.
7. Discover Moroccan Cuisine
Merzouga sits at the meeting point of Berber, Arab, and Saharan culinary traditions. At Sahara Royal Resort, every stay includes a generous Moroccan dinner and breakfast prepared by our experienced kitchen team. Slow-cooked lamb tagine with preserved lemons and olives, triple-steamed couscous with seven vegetables, fragrant harira soup, freshly baked Moroccan bread, and traditional mint tea poured from height — these are the flavours of the Sahara.
Breakfast at the resort includes Moroccan pancakes (msemen), honey, fresh-squeezed orange juice, amlou almond paste, soft-boiled eggs, and seasonal fruits. For guests who prefer to dine privately, meals can be served inside your tent or on your personal terrace overlooking the dunes.
8. Simply Be in the Desert
Perhaps the most underrated thing to do in Merzouga is nothing at all. The Sahara has a quality of silence and stillness that is profoundly rare in the modern world. Sitting on a dune with a glass of mint tea as the afternoon light moves across the sand. Reading in the shade of your tent. Lying by the pool with no sound but the occasional Saharan wind. Watching the stars appear, one by one, until the sky is entirely full.
This is the kind of experience that most travel never delivers — and that the luxury desert camp environment of Sahara Royal Resort makes completely effortless.
