Best Time to Visit
Merzouga, Morocco
Merzouga sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in south-eastern Morocco — one of the most spectacular Saharan landscapes in all of Africa. The timing of your visit makes an enormous difference to your experience. Here is the complete seasonal guide from the team at Sahara Royal Resort, a luxury desert camp in Merzouga at the very foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
October – November: The Golden Season
October and November are widely considered the best months to visit Merzouga. Daytime temperatures range from 24°C to 30°C — warm and perfectly comfortable for camel rides, dune walks, and sunset watching. The nights are refreshingly cool, around 12°C to 16°C, making for exceptional stargazing conditions and deep, restful sleep. The landscape is vivid and the light extraordinary.
These months attract experienced travellers who want to experience the Sahara at its most atmospheric — golden light all day, cold mint tea at sunset, and a night sky that genuinely leaves you breathless. At Sahara Royal Resort, our outdoor pool is at its most enjoyable during October and November: warm enough to swim by afternoon, cool enough to make the transition into evening magical.
December – February: Cool Nights, Perfect Days
Winter in Merzouga brings cooler temperatures — daytime highs between 16°C and 22°C, with nights dropping to 4°C or below. These are among the most dramatic months for photography: the dune colours change dramatically in low winter light, and the Milky Way blazes across a sky of extraordinary clarity. It can occasionally rain, and frost has been recorded.
Our luxury tents at Sahara Royal Resort are fully air-conditioned and heated, making winter visits perfectly comfortable. Camel rides, stargazing, and Berber evenings around a desert fire are particularly memorable in the cold winter months. December is also when the famous Merzouga Rally and various off-road events pass through the region.
March – April: Peak Season
March and April represent the peak travel season for Merzouga. Temperatures are ideal — 20°C to 28°C by day, with comfortable evenings. The desert is at its most alive: wildflowers occasionally bloom after winter rains, nomadic camps appear on the dunes, and the light is clear and rich. Booking in advance is essential during these months, as demand for quality desert camps is highest.
At Sahara Royal Resort, March and April see our highest occupancy. We recommend booking your stay at our luxury desert camp in Merzouga at least 6–8 weeks ahead if you're visiting in spring. The combination of perfect weather, long days, and cool nights makes this the most popular time for honeymoons, anniversary trips, and first-time visits to the Sahara.

Check Availability on WhatsAppMay – September: Summer Heat
Summer in Merzouga is intense — temperatures regularly exceed 40°C in July and August. This is not impossible to visit, but requires planning. Our Sahara Royal Resort remains fully operational year-round, with silent air-conditioned tents ensuring a cool refuge whatever the desert temperature outside. The outdoor pool becomes a genuine sanctuary in summer, and the dramatic heat creates a rawer, more elemental Saharan experience.
May and September are transitional months — still hot but more manageable, with daytime highs around 33°C to 38°C. Sunrise and sunset activities are best in summer, as the middle of the day calls for shade, cold water, and the pool. If visiting in summer, we recommend arriving in the late afternoon and planning all outdoor activities for early morning or evening.
